Four
Seasons
Summer - The air is thick, the blooms are
bold, and everyone is on vacation. Now is the best time to reap
the rewards of a well-planned garden. Get yourself some outdoor
furniture
to truly enjoy the view. Summer-flowering bulbs are easy to grow
and offer show-stopping color. Heat can be a terrible killer. Be
sure to water early morning and late evening to keep the garden
bed moist. Keep a watering
can handy on the porch, or invest in a fully automated
system (great for when you're on vacation).
Winter - Branches, berries and the bloom
of orchids. These are the treasures of winter. If your orchids aren't
blooming, try housing them somewhere cool (they don't like the heat).
If you've purchased a live Christmas tree, consider digging
a spot for it post-festivities. Don't forget to sow your seeds at
this time. Use seed-raising
soil and remember to keep your container well-watered.
Once planted, soak your seedlings daily for the first week, and
always sprinkle with snail
dust/liquid to keep those slugs at bay.
Autumn - Get the gloves
on, it's planting time. As soon as those hot days have passed, it's
time to bring out the spade
and sow your seeds.
Planting early in the fall gives plants enough time form strong
root stems before cold weather hits. In cold climates, plant at
least 6 weeks before the first anticipated frost (call your local
extension office for the first frost date).
Spring - Those bulbs
have burst through, the air is dizzy with pollen and it's time to
prune.
Don't forget to sow your seeds
at this time. Use seed-raising
soil, and remember to keep your container
well-watered.
